I love the way RCP just alternates pro- and anti-Trump headlines. I'll just check in on one of each:
"We are witnessing the first stages of a Trump police state," warns Robert Reich: "As civilian control gives way to military control, the nation splits into those who are most vulnerable to it and those who support it. The dictatorship entrenches itself by fomenting fear and anger on both sides. These are frightening and depressing times. But remember: although it takes one authoritarian to establish a police state, it takes just 3.5% of a population to topple him and end it."
That link on "3.5%" goes to a definition "the 3.5% rule": "Nonviolent protests are twice as likely to succeed as armed conflicts – and those engaging a threshold of 3.5% of the population have never failed to bring about change." Reich is hoping 3.5% of Americans will take to the streets — peacefully and patriotically — and "topple" the duly elected President.
Both Shellenberger and Reich say they're for peace, and both also say that they believe the other side is out for violence.

Which side is burning cars? There might be a clue there.
They regularly alternate pro and con, which makes it so noteworthy that there is only 1 true con in this list.
Reich has always been a nut job. Never worth the time to read.
That number to a decimal place feels like out and out unscientific innumerate manipulation. A lying dogged-faced pony soldier…
Reich is making the direct color revolution play. Openly. I thought he was too sophisticated for that, but that just shows my judgement is poor regarding Reich. We already knew that's what was up, but it's good to get it in writing.
A season of change for Democrats to regret a warming of the climate.

Yeah, I don't remember that either.

Perfect conditions for a civil war!
Leftists are so predictable.
Allow millions of illegals into the nation ILLEGALLY...
Then call it a police state when we attempt to remove them.
That's Robert 3rd Reich

Reich is desperate, there's no room for sophistication and subtlety when you're desperate.
Trump will spend his term trying to undo the damage Democrats have done with little help from congressional eunuchs. Democrats will be dragging their feet by suing, cheerleading mobs and publishing lies. Meanwhile the jihad rolls on, China arms herself and Trump pisses on people who might help him.
Leftists LOVE crime, illegals, illegals voting for them, and non-stop lying.
We all know. Its not a secret.
By targeting day laborers at Home Depot, ICE is finally letting legal American citizens live the dream of making $80 a day pulling weeds and painting sheds.
I'd pay good money to see Iman & Peachy spend a day cutting broccoli in the Imperial Valley at 92 degrees.
Only paid and organized dedicated antifa leftists and other various low-lives - are allowed to riot and insurrection.
Reich is trying to activate more Democrat Party assassin's by comparing Trump to Hitler and insinuating that a real battle will be required to "topple" him and that he's a "threat" to the United States.
Is Robert Reich calling for a coup by a small minority of the population? A big riot has never resulted in the removal of a US president. That's what elections are for, and his side lost.
Has Reich made any predictions that were correct? I seem to recall most of his being wildly inaccurate. How many times does he have to be wrong before he stops being an "expert"?
By targeting day laborers at Home Depot, ICE is finally letting legal American citizens live the dream of making $80 a day pulling weeds and painting sheds.
It's only $80 because there's this willing pool of slave labor that's been made available. Once those people are back in their own country, the price for labor in the United States will rise to the point that it becomes attractive again for Americans to take those jobs.
These new highly-paid workers will then replenish our tax base and Social Security base.
The only other way to accomplish something this meaningful would be for women to voluntarily agree to go home to their children and create a worker shortage to increase wages. But of course, women won't do that because they don't really want to raise their own kids.
The Dems have a new plan to win over American men: Have a protester circle a burning vehicle on a motorbike while waving a Mexican flag. A sure fire winner.
Reminder the 3% rule is what you see on people trucks with a roman numeral III.
Three Percenters movement
The Roman numeral III with a circle of thirteen stars represents the Three Percenters movement, which advocates for a strict interpretation of the Second Amendment and resistance to the U.S. federal government.
Funny how Reich fears that group but now promotes his own 3% solution.
“By targeting day laborers at Home Depot, ICE is finally letting legal American citizens live the dream of making $80 a day pulling weeds and painting sheds.“
^^^^^ Jobs high school kids used to do.
I think it bears pointing out that Reich didn't have the guts to publish that in a US paper. The link is to the Grauniad.
Its like living in a SF story with a "Time loop". We've seen all this before in 2020. The liberal/left riots, and they start burning, looting, and attacking police. The Democrats and the MSM then call it "mostly peaceful", focus on the grievances, romanticize (sic) the violence, minimize the police injuries and deaths, and highlight any "Police brutality".
Its the exact same playbook. And this after these same people spend 4 years crying over the capital hill police injuries and raging about the "J6 Insurrectionists" and how they should be put in jail forever.
And where is creepy Senator Tom Tillis (NC-RINO)? He was so upset that a Trump nominee supported the J6ers. He should be REALLY REALLY upset over the LA lawlessness? Oh wait, he's not.
"Both sides say" they are for non-violence, but only ONE side keeps lighting shit on fire and destroying property while calling for the murder of cops. Reich is a propagandist and anarchist.
And for all those dumb "moderate Republicans" this is where your "Lo, the poor immigrants" rhetoric gets us. You have foreingers, here illegally, rioting in the streets, with Politicians either yawning or supporting the rioters.
Notice that George Bush couldn't wait to get in front of a camera and cry about "Brown babies in cages", but will say nothing about foriengers rioting in the streets of LA. Just like he refused to condemn BLM/Antifa. That's Because Bush isn't an American - he's a globalist.
Kak-a-phony

George Floyd/ media inspired/democrat party collusion with Soros $$$$$ destruction - inspired Antifa and BLM rioters caused billions in property damage - often in poorer black neighborhoods that cannot afford such destruction.
The Tampon Terrorist Tim Types---- just laugh. Breathe in deep the burning tires.
Fuck those people in LA. I want to see the city surrounded and everyone checked for citizenship or immigration status. Some locale needs to be made an example. Give the Angelenos something to cry about
>Both Shellenberger and Reich...say that they believe the other side is out for violence.<
Take a gander at the evening news on any given day to determine which of them is correct.
"During President Biden's administration, there was an estimated net increase of about 5.5 to 6 million illegal immigrants, contributing to a total population that some estimates suggest could be between 30 to 50 million. However, other research organizations maintain that the number is around 10 to 12 million."
AI from Duck Duck Go
3.5% of population (340,111,000) of the United States equals11.9 million.
Well, the US is very different from most European and small countries. For example, over 400 years of French history, if
an insurgent group gains control of Paris, there is regime
change. DC is not the same. The US is not the same. We are
a continental nation without a genuine "capital" city.
The Palestinian Hamas Jew Haters are deeply embedded into the rioting. The democrat party base.
Former Law Clerk has the MSNBC talking points down.
OOOOO - you're deporting the slave class! How dare you!
I hire people who are here legally.
Leftists demand the law be burned to the ground.
"Reich is hoping 3.5% of Americans will take to the streets — peacefully and patriotically — and "topple" the duly elected President."
As opposed to having enough votes to elect the person who was not *duly elected* President.

What civilian control gave way to military control? I’m not aware that the civil authorities in LA were even attempting to control the situation. Here is a hint, the same protests were attempted in NYC. Trump is not sending the national guard to NY, because NYPD controlled the rioters.

The probably mostly white, college-educated commenters on this blog would never stoop to such work, huh? Boy, it's a good thing those darker-skinned, indigenous, uneducated folks don't mind doing it!
What a thing to say.
Moving on, sort of - it appears (this is Grok's answer) that only about 2% or so of American farm acreage is devoted to fruits and vegetables (that is, not grains or oilseeds), and of that small acreage, maybe half or a little less is hand-harvested. So there's that.
And then there's the fact that there's no evidence that ICE is carrying out "fishing expedition" raids anywhere - they are going to places where they are looking for particular people. That's not at all as Kak (or Bass or Newsom) is characterizing what is happening.
"If the illegals are sent back, who will do construction?" is the "SOMEONE has to pick the cotton!" of the 21st century.
Tolkein -
Honest pay for an honest days work is admirable.
When I grew up -that's exactly what we did in the corn fields.
You leftists are so condescending and elitist - you demand An illegal slave class pick your fruit and veggies for much less than 15$ per/hour.
From the LA Times:
L.A. officials struggle to curb vandalism, thefts, fires, violence in downtown L.A.
Some businesses were vandalized and burglarized overnight downtown, concluding hours of unrest that saw Waymo cars burned, police cruisers crushed with rocks and electric scooters and various forms of vandalism downtown and in the civic center.
There's no need to guess which side is responsible. Everybody knows who's doing this shit.
I'm sure the folks at MSNBC are all plugged into that 3.5% notion for a revolution. The Left will spin that out and encourage more riots.
I just came here to see everyone pick on their favorite moron, Robert Reich.
You leftist are blind to your own condescending elitist narcissism.
As long as you get what YOU want - a slave class who dutifully votes for your corrupt leaders - you are happy. Never mind many illegals are driving illegally and killing people on our roads and highways.
“I'd pay good money to see Iman & Peachy spend a day cutting broccoli in the Imperial Valley at 92 degrees.”
What is it with lefties that they think there are 2 classes of people. Those who are fit to be slaves and those who aren’t. If a job isn’t fit for you and me to do, then we shouldn’t force it on anyone. I worked with a woman who used to be a migrant worker with her husband. Both were US citizens. At the time the job paid well enough for them to support their families and they preferred it to their other options.
If they couldn't rely on cheap illegal labour, maybe they'd have to employ American citizens and pay them the minimum wage? $15/hr in California, isn't it?
Funnily enough, a whole lot of the fruits and vegetables, half or so requiring hand harvesting, that I referenced in my previous comment are in fact grown in southern California.
And it's $20/hr for fast food places that don't make their own bread, apparently. My brother has told me that he's heard a vicious rumor that this carve-out originates in Newsom's part ownership of (a?) Panera. I have no idea whether that's either true or a factor.
The best idiotic comments online last night were those that showed the restaurant workers helping police to wash the tear gas or pepper spray out of their eyes and said "The people you want to deport are the ones helping you!" As if every Latino-looking restaurant worker in Los Angeles is illegal.
(Most LEGAL immigrants loathe and despise illegals, who get for free--or steal--the things the legals worked very hard to acquire).

My husband and I were in California for about three weeks over two visits this spring. He grew up in southern California and was saying that until he moved away a couple of years after college, people always drove like bats out of hell on the freeway; now, he noticed, everyone was sticking to the speed limit or even below. (He did this noticing at rather high volume as he was looking for holes in traffic so he could, you know, drive rather more like a bat out of hell.)
Part of that change might have to do with higher speed limits now (though I was in CA for college too, and like him, I remember people's driving quite a lot faster than today's speed limits). I speculated, however, that more drivers today are in the country illegally, don't have drivers' licenses, and are avoiding giving the police a reason to pull them over.

Even among Althouse supporters, the main problem we have is that not enough of your kind got hit in the head.
Gee 3D, should we compare that ONE cop firing a rubber NON-LETHAL round at the reporter (a bad thing, even if she was reporting from a zone ordered "clear" by cops) to the hundreds of foreign flag-waving criminals hurling rocks threw cop car windshields? One was stupid and should cost the cop his job. The other is attempting to murder multiple LEOs which should result in prison.
Followed by deportation, if applicable.
It’s amusing Robert Reich assumes a revolution will end well for himself.
It appears that Robert Reich wants to strengthen democracy by having 3.5 pct of the population decide that they can violently overthrow a president who was elected by a majority popular vote.
When Democrats expose their true beliefs it is very scary. I don’t want these people to have any power at all.

You’re correct. And I fell for that too. Having said that, a lot of jobs, especially in the building trades used to be done by US citizens.
Many years ago we had our roof tarred in Arizona summer heat. Those guys, US citizens, had such a grueling job but they were so proud of what they did and they were paid well for it. Then John McCain came out with this statement that no American would do roofing in AZ. He said it with such disdain . It was disgusting. How can anyone slam a job as being beneath us. Okay for them, but not us. It ticks me off. So I guess I will keep taking the bait.

They need to talk to ABC. Those folks appear to think it's just a bunch of people having fun watching cars burn.
Robert Reich is the guy who proved on Twitter last year that he didn't know the difference between gross profits and net profits. It's pretty scary that someone that economically illeterate was the Secretary of Labor once.
I think that the American people were frightened by the violence and destruction during the George Floyd riots in 2020. Many people thought that if they just made nice with the rioters and tried to be "understanding" about it, the riot mentality would stop. Obviously, that's not the case with the hard core rioters and Antifa fascists. The leinency that so many of the rioters got in 2020 just embolded more bad behaviour now.
I have no problem with peaceful protests, but when the line is crossed into violence and destruction, people need to condemn the violence, especially the real protestors and their supporters. I'd be willing to bet that Martin Luthor King would have been one of the first people who would have immediately pulled the plug on one of his protests if some of the people on his side became violent. But not only have Karen Bass and Gavin Newsom not called for the riots to stop, they're actively fighting against efforts to control them.

Howard - I guess all those images of burning cars are - just lovely peace in action.
I'd just like to correct a misconception that seems common. Mexican day laborers do not work for $80/day, not even close. In Rural Arizona the starting rate is $20/hour for unskilled labor. A guy with basic handyman skills can easily charge $35/hour + $20 for his sidekick. I imagine it is higher in California. The work they do may be what American teens would have done 30 years ago, but you won't find many teens these days who are willing to work hard jobs. The rancher kids can still work, and they do, but most are entirely useless I'm sad to say. I'm not arguing in favor of uncontrolled immigration, just pointing our a big misconception. I'd like to find a way to keep the border closed to unvetted unproved immigrants (Trump has largely done that) while allowing most or at least many of the current trespassers to become legal residents. Most are good people who contribute to the USA. Some are not.

You're correct, Jamie. We have the same problem here in Phoenix. Ours also slam their brakes on if if someone says the word "Cop". That's why I'm so glad I work remotely and don't have to get on the freeways anymore!
Here is Scheinbaum urging "mobilization" against the remittance tax today (I think)
3.5% is to be charged to the people sending the remittance from the US.
No mention of the 16% Mexican tax, plus bank and transfer fees, plus check cashing fees at the local superette and so on. Mexico takes 20-25% of the remittance but they are upset about the 3.5% taste the US wants?
Something I noticed on another Scheinbaum vid just now. They have a person doing sign language in an inset window. Whenever the crowd applauds, the signer does jazz hands. Is this unusual or have I just never noticed it before?

Reich is the super smaht economist who didn't complain when the Fed and WH let inflation burn for 9 long months before doing anything about it but DID COMPLAIN as soon as the Fed raised rates in March of 2022. Reich thinks we didn't get ENOUGH inflation. I bet the average Home Depot day laborer could have done better.
Both Shellenberger and Reich say they're for peace, and both also say that they believe the other side is out for violence.
But only Shellenberger is right. What sort of “peace” does Reich want? Clearly he is advocating for a “peace” where a tiny, but very violent, minority can use the threat of riots and mayhem to enforce their will upon the majority, regardless of what the laws are, lest there be no peace. Come to think of it, hasn’t that been one of the go-to mottos of the left? “No peace” unless their demands are met? Maybe we’re overdue as a country to start saying “no” to the spoiled leftists.

And a lot of people are taking that in a way I suspect she didn't intend. It will be interesting to see how long it is before she figures that out!

Yep, it might make sending money home less attractive as well as trying to cross the border less attractive. People forget the US is a poverty relief valve for Mexico.
Free speech style protesting does not include violence, property destruction, theft, or restricting the public's movement. When people resort to that it's an attempt to take advantage for personal gain, or an attempt to force the government to get violent. There is no other effective purpose. You can't get the public on your side with any of that. Just the opposite. Therefore such actions deserve no respect, only arrest. They are not trying to do good for anyone. Same with those supporting them.
Shouldn't it allay Reich's fear and depression that every prominent Democrat last week was braying the Trump always chickens out before doing anything drastic?
Having lived and run a business in Los Angeles for decades, I watched our government and culture mostly encourage illegal immigration, with the occasional short-lived pushback. Few businesses avoided hiring them because that's who showed up for labor jobs 10 to 1. Some of us tried through asking for proof of right to work and later by using E-verify. In California, both were illegal and open to litigation at various times. Many illegals worked for decades, paying taxes, raising kids, sending them to college and loving America. Then the Democrats took it to insulting levels of absurdity in both numbers, and support far beyond what they ever did for Americans. It has turned most Americans against all illegals, which is unfair to the early ones who most Americans were OK with. As with nearly every social problem we have, the Democrats are behind it, because they are never satisfied with either a good thing or shared power. That's called Progressivism.
Reich is a small man.
yes its been 25 years since the Elian rendition,
have we seen, reich and peter dinklage, in the same room
"Reich is a small man."
A small man the size of a smaller man.
We're adults so we know it's not the 3.5% that matter but rather the top 1%.
On the 3.5% thing, it doesn’t look like it is even 3.5% of LA’s population. And it seems the only place getting out of hand is LA. Summer of Love 2.0 is failing fast.
...well, at first we only saw dinklage, then we got reich a box to stand on...
I'll just say this: Any rioters who wave a foreign flag should be deported back to that country. If they are naturalized citizens, they should be stripped of their citizenship for lying on their Naturalization Oath of Allegiance:
"I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God."
Any natural-born American citizens waving foreign flags while rioting should be punished to the fullest extent of the law for whatever crimes they commit during the riot.
The video of LA horse cops and the guy on the ground is pretty heinous and excessive.
Free speech style protesting does not include violence, property destruction, theft, or restricting the public's movement.
You are right about three out of the four. But your last restriction destroys any semblance of "free speech style protesting". Under your definition, the police at the Selma march were perfectly within their rights to break up the march.
And this goes for whatever the subject of your protest is. Isn't that the entire point of protesting outside abortion clinics. That would not even forgive the Jan 6 protesters who just wandered around the Capitol and caused no damage and did not leave public areas of the Capitol.
In the BBB there is a provision for a 5% (lowered to 3.5%) tax on remittances out of the US.
Does that include investments in foreign companies or transfers to off-shore accounts? Bet it doesn't.
although it takes one authoritarian to establish a police state, it takes just 3.5% of a population to topple him and end it.
The most dangerous authoritarians are all on the Left. I am certain that upwards of 3.5% of Americans would take up arms and purge ourselves of the collectivist cancer if offered no other alternative.
It appears the Democrat leadership truly believes there should NOT be any laws against illegal immigration, nor should there be Law and Order.
Fuck these people.
Fredo keeps his losing streak going…
both also say that they believe the other side is out for violence.
Snort. If our side was out for violence, you'd know it. The fact we're not should be obvious.

So Freder, When you say it is OK to block access, does that not include the use of violence? Otherwise, you are not blocking access. I can just walk through the picket line.
I may have a moral obligation not to, depending my my belief, but there is nothing other than my conscience stopping me and I am fine with that.
If you think you have a right to use violence to stop me, you can fuck right off.

Reich's not a "Small man". He's a poisonous dwarf.
Supposedly, Newsome is "gambling" his stand will make political gains with the D's. LOL. Democrat voters will vote for whoever their leaders annoint in 2028. They are dumb robots.
Did they block access to perform human rites at Planned Parenthood? Sequester the thought.
We didn't start the conflagration... it's been a liberal license since Newsom was fiddling and Bass was strumming a DEIng tune with American Civil Liberties Unburdened.
La-la-la-land in California is a scorched carbon state.
This is not a nuanced position these moronically short-sighted Democrats are taking. There is no middle ground here.
TDS does that to people.
Meanwhile, in San Bernardino County (largest county in the US)...
"Our department is aware of the protests occurring in Los Angeles County in reference to the ICE Enforcement Operations.
A private correctional facility contracted to the federal government, located in our county may be utilized to house ICE detainees.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department supports the right to peacefully protest however, we will not tolerate lawlessness and violence in this County.
Anyone who violates the law, attacks law enforcement, or vandalizes property will be arrested, incarcerated and prosecuted.
"Under your definition, the police at the Selma march were perfectly within their rights to break up the march."
I understand that, but it was not necessary in Selma to get the reforms to happen, and should not be tolerated, because where would it end? What if a child on the way to the emergency room was blocked in Selma and died? Is that just too bad? Mass kidnapping is not free speech? Blocking roadways can get people killed. They have no idea where those people need to go or why, and it doesn't work anyway. Civil rights is for everyone, including people you may not give a shit about in the rapture of self-righteousness. I think my red line is more humane and responsible.
If I understand this correctly, taking 3.5% of remittances will overthrow a government. But which one?
"I think my red line is more humane and responsible."
You can be sure insisting that leftists accept being inconvenienced in the furthering of a cause they do not support (you've probably noticed they don't much like protests when it comes to abortion clinics) is something they would find totally unacceptable.
But, of course, *their* causes are different.

it takes just 3.5% of a population to topple him
Astounding to hear an alleged "Democrat" say that he thinks the 3.5% should rule us all, and the 96.5% should shut up and take it.
Astounding to hear an alleged "Democrat" reject the 2024 election, while he calls for a revolt out in the streets to topple what the voters decided.
I mean, I'm not astounded. Antifa = fascism. Democrat = fascist. I'm just surprised that a former Secretary of Labor, who worked for Ford and Carter and Clinton and Obama, is now on record as saying that we should have a relatively peaceful riot (like 01/06), and if we get 3.5% people on board, we can overturn the republic.
I don't want to be a height bigot, but he might have a Napoleon complex.
I am sure Napoleon, by the way, had a greater than 3.5% support ratio. Hitler had a greater than 3.5% support ratio. It is not hard to get a 3.5% support ratio.
Republicans say that Democrats take the wrong side on every 20-80 issue.

States haven't ever had a right to import a foreign army and use it to attack US citizens and law enforcement.
I'd rate the Crabtree article as pro-Trump, making the score 5-3.
The foreign invaders were throwing explosive devices at the horses. If they got trampled it's their own damn fault.

Trump only wins election because people like Newsom and Bass convince Americans that they're totally disinterested in public safety.
People want safety and if leaders refuse to provide safety within the law -- voters will find someone who will provide it through other means. Burning vehicles is not protest, it is violence.
As long as Democrats conflate the two, Americans will vote as they did last November.
"We are witnessing the first stages of a Trump police state," warns Robert Reich.
I understand the argument he's trying to make but in this case, I'm afraid he comes up a little short.

You would have to pay them more than minimum wage then they probably would do it.
But Rich is just reminding everyone that the Democrat party was founded on exploiting foreign labor and that the party of Jefferson Davis is still alive and kicking and ready to go to war to keep wages for working class as low as possible.

3.5%? Is that "Science?"
I was on a flight where Reich asked the F/A to help him put his bag in the overhead compartment. She mistakenly tried to put him in as well.
"The foreign invaders were throwing explosive devices at the horses."
That seems like it could explain why those horseback officers responded as they did. Now, all we need to do is figure out what it was those cops in their cars on the freeway did to cause people to throw rocks/concrete at them from the overpass.
Michael Schellenberger states:
A lot of people are upset about these images of violent protesters in Los Angeles waving the Mexican flag. If they love Mexico so much, why are they so upset at enforcing our laws against illegal entry?
But waving a Mexican flag in LA is no more unusual than waving the Canadian flag in Detroit. It is not against the law, nor is protesting Trump's deliberate violation of the law.
But who started this LA war? Dozens of federal agents wearing helmets and green camouflage arrived in hulking armored trucks, white vans, and other unmarked vehicles. A crowd of immigrant activists and supporters soon approached them. Some agents carried riot shields, and others held rifles, as well as shotguns that appeared to be loaded with less-than-lethal ammunition. Some officers fired less-than-lethal projectiles and squirted what appeared to be pepper or perhaps bear spray. And (gasp) some protesters threw chairs and other objects, fired off fireworks, and appeared to spray-paint anti-ICE graffiti on a building.
Perhaps General Bondi should study a 2017 analysis of nearly 2,000 injuries sustained by kinetic projectiles that found that the vast majority were severe; 300 people were left permanently disabled, and 53 died. Kinetic projectiles are objects that are propelled to high speeds and rely on their kinetic energy to cause damage upon impact. They can include various types of ammunition, such as rubber bullets and specialized non-lethal rounds used in law enforcement, like flash-bang grenades.

Freder, you're beating a dead horse.
In the Jim Crow south it might have been "perfectly legal" for the police to treat black demonstraters that way.
But national revulsion to the violence perpetrated against the Selma protesters lacking a march permit led to the Civil Rights Acts making such police conduct illegal and punishable today.
Permits are still required to demonstrate, protest or parade on public streets and highways. But the police can't beat the crap out of peaceful protesters without permits, only demand they disperse and arrest them if they don't.

Trump has doubled the number of California National Guard troops he’s called up, and backed them up with 700 active duty Marines.
And if that doesn’t work, I hear he plans to ask Governor Abbott for the loan of a Texas Ranger.
As for those two pussy reporters hit by rubber bullets -- one shamefully a NYPost writer who fibbed about what he was really doing -- give me a break. I've embedded myself in violent protests. It's the risk you take. Mere "credentials" hung around your neck don't cut it anymore because the terrorists make their own "journalism I.D." in order to attack police. You report to the commanding officer in advance; let them take pictures and fingerprints of you in case you get arrested; give them your ID, obey their orders, and don't get in their damn way while they're being firebombed and worse. I've slipped up and been teargassed, and I don't blame the police at all. They were being attacked with weapons and had previously been shot at by the same group. Waah, wahh, Post reporter David Propper: you write you can't exactly recall "what" you were doing on that bridge with the leftist terrorists who were firebombing police when the police popped you with a rubber bullet? You were hanging with terrorists trying to kill cops for a bog payday. The terrorists were rioting. Cry me a river and put on your big boy pants. And be glad the leftist thugs didn't do worse to you. You should know better -- and so should the Post, which is rapidly going left in the newsroom while staying right in the editorial pages.

Meanwhile, the once-reliable City Journal is befouling itself with that loudmouth know-nothing Chris Rufo demanding that Trump let the riots burn out of control so he has better "optics" by leaving the policing to local officers. You know, the ones crouching under bridges with molotov cocktails and chunks of pavement raining down on them, whose superiors side with the rioters?
Rufo is clearly ignorant of the federal, state, and local decrees that would let Los Angeles burn to the ground as front-line police there are not legally allowed to contain shoplifting, let alone rioting. Even if people are hurling bricks and firebombs at them. This is just one of a dozen important facts Rufo misses in the three minutes he spent thinking about this travesty of an article.
Remember when City Journal employed experts, not suavely ignorant political consultants? They'll never get my money again. Maybe Heather MacDonald can explain to Rufo what it feels like to have bricks thrown at your head.
That's a riot? I was living in South Central when the brothers put one on in '65. That...was a riot.
